Mathematics is the Queen of the Sciences, and
Arithmetic the Queen of Mathematics.
The science of mathematics presents the most brilliant example of how
pure reason may successfully enlarge its domain without the aid of
experience.
Pure mathematics is, in its way,the poetry of logical ideas.
But there is another reason for the hign repute of mathematics:
it is mathematics that offers the exact natural sciences a certain
measure of security which, without mathematics, they could not attain.
Mathematics is the tool specially suited for dealing with abstract
concepts of any kind and there is no limit to its power in this field. For
this reason a book on the new physics,if not purely descriptive of
experimental work,must be essentially mathematical.
Nature’s great book is written in mathematical symbol.
Mathematics is a creative art because mathematicians create beautiful
new concepts;it is a creative art because mathematicians live, act, and
think live artists; and it is a creative art because mathematicians
regard it so.
The essence of mathematics lies in its freedom.
The instruction of children should aim gradually
to combine knowing and doing . Among all sciences mathematics seems to
be the only one of a kind to satisfy this aim most completely.
The only way to learn mathematics is to do mathematics.
If the educational potential of mathematics is to be realized, then the
attention that has to be paid to its technical aspects must be balanced
by attention paid to its structural ,historical, genetic and
philosophical aspects.
We must teach these people good, useful mathematics in a low-key,relaxed
style, free from authoritarianism,so that they come to feel not
threatened by it,not daunted by its unfamiliar symbols, but
comfortable with it and convinced that they are now better able to reach
rational decisions and cope with our complicated world. Mathematics will
then become not a barrier, but the key to unlock the door to a fuller
life.
Some teachers demand that students solve mathematics problems only by
the method taught in class,This process can thwart initiative, compound
frustration,and promote avoidance.
When students are forced to develop their own approaches to unsolved
problems, they benefit much more than from exposure to the mathematics
alone.
At any rate,in my opinion, one of the principal aims of the high
school mathematics curriculum is to develop the students’ ability to
solve problems.
When introduced at the wrong time of place, good logic may be the worst
enemy of good teaching .
If,however, the teacher has had no experience in creative work of
some sort, how will he be able to inspire,to lead,to help,or even
to recognize the creative activity of his students?A teacher who
acquired whatever he knows in mathematics purely receptively can hardly
promote the active learning of his students. A teacher who never had a
bright idea in his life will probably reprimand a student who has one
instead of encouraging him.
The mathematical method is the essence of
mathematics. He who fully comprehends the method is a mathematician.Music
has much resemblance to algebra. Pure mathematics is real magician’s
wand. The real mathematician is an enthusiast person;without
enthusiasm,no mathematics. One may be a mathematician of the first
rank without being able to compute,it is possible to be a great
computer without having the slightest idea of mathematics. What
logarithms are to mathematics, that mathematics are to the other
sciences.
It is the man not the method that solves the problem.
Mathematics possesses an aesthetic value as clearly defined as that of
music or poetry.
——Jerry P. King
There is a myth that a mathematician must be “very fast with
figures”. This is false——mathematics mainly involves intuition and
the ability to grasp theoretical ideas. If a mathematician has these
talents,he need have very little else.
Do not imagine that mathematics is
hard and crabbed and repulsive to common sense, it is merely the
etherealization of common sense.
The attraction of mathematics is that it’s great fun.
If you wish to learn swimming, you have to go into the water, and if
you wish to become a problem solver, you have to solve problems.
It appears to me that if one wants to make progress in mathematics, one
should study the masters and not the pupils.
Conceptual thinking is the salt of mathematics.
Facts are not much use, considered as facts. They bewilder by their
number and their apparent incoherency. Let them be digested into theory,
however, and brought into mutual harmony, and it is another matter.
Theory is of the essence of facts. Without theory scientific knowledge
would be only worthy of the mad house.
What, in fact , is mathematical discovery? It does not consist in making
new combinations with mathematical entities that are already know. That
can be done by anyone , and the combinations that could be so formed
would be infinite in number, and the greater part of them would be
absolutely devoid of interest. Discovery consists precisely in not
constructing useless combinations, but in constructing those which are
useful, which are an infinitely small minority. Discovery is
discernment, selection.
Mathematical facts worthy of being studied are those which,by their
analogy with other facts, are capable of leading us to the knowledge of
a mathematical law, in the same way that experimental facts lead us to
the knowledge of a physical law. They are those which reveal unsuspected
relations between other facts, long since known, but wrongly believed to
be unrelated to each other.

A mathematician, who is not also some thing of a poet, will never be a complete mathematician.
The essence of mathematics is the perception of logical relationships between seemingly disparate ideas;the most successful mathematicians are those whose range is widest and whose ability to see analogies and connect ideas is greatest.

Those who assert that the
mathematical sciences say nothing of the beautiful are in error. The
chief forms of beauty are order, commensurability and precision.

The feeling of mathematical beauty , of the harmony of numbers and

real mathematicians know.

I think it is correct to say that (the mathematician’s) criteria of
selection, and also those of success, are mainly aesthetical.

Aesthetic judgments transcend both logic and applicability in the
ranking of mathematical theorems: beauty and elegance have more to do
with the value of a mathematical idea than does either strict truth or
possible utility.

which affects the reflective mind , which has acquired an appreciation

May not Music be described as Mathematics of sence, Mathematics as Music
of the reason? The soul of each the same! Thus the musician feels
Mathematics, the mathematician thinks Music—Music the dream,
Mathematics—the working life—each to receive its consummation from
the other when the human intelligence, elevated to its perfect type,
shall shine forth glorified in some future Mozart—Dirichlet or
Beethoven—Gauss—a union already not indistinctly foreshadowed in the
genius and lobours of a Helmholtz.
I like to look at mathematics almost more as an art than as a science,
for the activity of the mathematician, constantly creating as he is ,
guided though not controlled by the external world of the senses, bears
a resemblance, not fanciful I believe but real, to the activity of an
artist, of a painter let us say. Rigorous deductive reasoning on the
part of the mathematician may be likened here to technical skill in
drawing on the part of the painter. Just as no one can become a good
painter without a certain amount of skill, so no one can become a
mathematician without the power to reason accurately up to a certain
point. Yet these qualities, fundamental though they are , do not make a
painter or mathematician worthy of the name, no indeed are they the most
important factors in the case. Other qualities of a far more subtle
sort, chief among which in both cases is imagination, go to the making
of a good artist of good mathematician.
